Corriere Bologna made the scoop. After all Bruno Barbieri he said it at the start of Masterchef 5: In spring 2016 I open a restaurant in Bologna, my city, the city where I live”(he was born in Medicina 54 years ago).

"It will not be a restaurant in the traditional sense of the term, nor a tavern or a trattoria", he specified, "I am thinking of a completely different concept than what people can expect, it is the desire to do research while still tying myself to tradition. The cuisine will be quite Bolognese but not too much ".

And not too downtown was supposed to be this special restaurant-not-restaurant, but not excessively out of the way either.

In short, all the traces led towards the number 71 in via Augusto Murri, site of a historic business, the Antica Trattoria dello Sterlino which, much regretted by the Bolognese press, had definitively lowered the shutter in July 2015 due to the too high rent.

Well yes, to go back to dealing with real catering, after the Cotidie experience flop in 2012 in London and a lot of television, a special place was needed, thus introduced by the old website still online:

"In the cellars of the Locanda dello Sterlino four centuries ago, the right degree of ventilation and humidity allow the slow, natural aging of wine, cheese, Parmesan and Emilian ham: essential ingredients of the dishes that have made Bolognese gastronomy famous".

To be understood, still today an inscription engraved on the chipped marble recalls that "Giovanni Wolfango Goethe, universal poet lived here during his famous trip to Italy".

The strategic position of the ancient restaurant, easily reachable from every point of the city, with a consolidated reputation over the centuries both as a hotel and as a restaurant, was not enough for Luigi Rossetti and his sister Anna, who managed it since 1968, to prevent its closure..

Low house, somewhat dilapidated plaster, the Sterlino has seen better times: an ancient horse changing station on the Futa, it has existed since the 1600s, Bolognese gourmets especially remember the glorious boiled meat, the dish that made it famous.

In the meantime, some indiscretions filter out on the mysterious format wanted by Bruno Barbieri to relaunch the structure.

"I want to create an Italian brand that goes around the world, I want to tell the story of Italian food together with the small producers who will have their showcase in this place".

Together with the judge of Masterchef there will be the chef Daniele Simonetti, also from Bologna, former collaborator at the London times of the Cotidie.

Masterchef gave him the well-deserved television success but Bruno Barbieri has a long career as a chef behind him, which began in the legendary Trigabulum of Argenta, period of activity 83/93, the first experimental restaurant in Italy to mark an era of cooking, earning 2 Michelin stars (and a third awarded honorary since the restaurant closed its doors before the official award).

The opening of the renovated Sterlino is scheduled for next May, while the chef is looking for a home in Bologna. And it seems that there will be tortellini. Fortunately.
