In France the law that obliges i supermarkets to avoid it food waste is in the home straight. The points of sale with an area greater than 400 square meters are obliged to donate to third sector entities, using the voluntary network, products that are expiring or unsold.
For infringements, fines starting from 75 thousand euros are envisaged.
It is not enough.
After supermarkets, France is a pioneering country in the fight against food waste even in restaurants and bistros.
To be precise, all the places that serve at least 180 meals a day are encouraged to distribute doggy bags, the little boxes to take home leftovers.
Each year in France they end up in the bin about 8 million tons of food.
It should not be forgotten, however, that much of the waste takes place in our home.
In Italy the waste of domestic food is valid in everything 8.4 billion euros the year, in other words 6, 7 euros per family per week. They are given in default, probably, because the real waste is higher than that declared (Waste Watcher data).
Among the causes are our insecurities: we often confuse the minimum conservation term with the Expiration date.
Better to repeat then that the words " Best before …”Guarantees the perfect quality (taste, fragrance, nutritional characteristics) of a product up to the date indicated. But properly stored foods can be consumed even after this date.
Instead, the words " To be consumed before ”Indicates the date after which the product begins the deterioration phase due to bacterial proliferation.
To cut down on food waste let's see through this series of infographics what are the foods that can be eaten even when "expired" and which, on the contrary, it is good to throw away.

One more thing.
In Italy waste generates 30 million tons of garbage, packaging is also among the main defendants.
Over one in 2 Italians is willing to spend a little more in order to have it to encourage the use of the product, thereby reducing waste.
We are convinced that small packages are useful for this purpose, while the greatest waste lurks in large packages that have been open for some time.
