A series of studies from the University of Copenhagen published by the scientific journal BioMed Central invites adults who do not suffer from intestinal irritation, colitis and diarrhea not to throw their hard-earned savings into probiotics.

What do we mean by probiotics?

"Live organisms that, when administered in adequate quantities, bring a benefit to the health of the host" (copyright WHO: World Health Organization).

We are talking about the organisms present in some products commonly sold in supermarkets such as yogurt, cheeses, fermented foods and energy bars which, according to what the advertisements claim: "maintain their immune defenses".

But as the Guardian explained yesterday, the results of the Danish study speak for themselves:

The beneficial effects of probiotics, (a market that is now worth about 32 million dollars), are only appreciable in people suffering from health problems such as intestinal irritation or colitis, in these cases they help to rebalance the intestinal flora.

Otherwise, there is no evidence of the beneficial effects in people who do not need them, and indeed, in this case the discrepancy between scientific reality and advertising is greater than ever.
