Noises, moans, screams. Police. On a warm August night, in an ordinary building of the Appio district, to Rome, the neighbors hear moans and screams coming from the accommodation of two elderly spouses.
Cries, screams and moans are so excruciating that the tenants of the building fearing the worst decide to call the police: the screams come right from the apartment of the two elders, and the suspicion that something serious is happening is growing more and more..
The police arrive on time, ready to track down some house rat caught red-handed by the elderly couple, or at least to quell a normal family dispute, always possible after decades of living together.
But the scene that presents itself before the eyes of the incredulous policemen is quite different.
In fact, once the apartment door is opened, they are not at the scene of a theft that ended in tragedy or some other heinous crime, but something quite different. Worst, perhaps
The policemen find themselves in front of Jole, 89, and Michele, 94. Together. Alone.
Alone in the suffocating heat of August, with only the TV to keep them company. Desolation, loneliness and sadness are the intruders who caused so much pain to the old spouses, making them sob to the point of alerting the neighbors.
A sad and painful scene, which could have ended with the classic call, by the policemen, of the ambulance on duty, to transport the two poor people to the hospital where, in an efficient and aseptic way, doctors and nurses would have checked their health conditions and then return them to the lonely life of all time.
But the story, whose ending seemed obvious, went differently.
Because the policemen, instead of just calling an ambulance, first headed quickly to the pantry and from there they took a packet of spaghetti.
Then they opened the fridge and, with the few things they found, they started cooking a nice plate of pasta with butter and Parmesan for everyone, thus preparing a spaghetti meal for four to enjoy in company.
Here, this was the help of the policemen: a plate of spaghetti eaten all together.
Not a simple check, not an efficient and aseptic rush to the nearest hospital, but a moment of humanity.
A moment of company, carefree, conviviality together with two elderly spouses forgotten in their apartment by relatives intent on enjoying their well-deserved holidays, alone with their memories in the unbearable heat of the Roman summer.
They offered a plate of spaghetti seasoned with the dignity, understanding, respect that everyone, committed to enjoying their holidays, had forgotten they could pay to Jole and Michele (among other things, sending the editorial offices of the main international media into a haze. resumed the news).
And this, we can be sure, was their most successful intervention.
