We admit it: we thought this tasting test would be much harder. When we were asked to taste the gluten-free cookies we immediately thought of a test of the privative ones, all work and no leisure.
Instead, we had to change our minds: the tastings gave decidedly unexpected results, at least from a gustatory point of view.
Nutrition gluten free ”, Which has spread in Italy in the last five or six years and previously practically non-existent, affects not only those suffering from intolerances, but also those who make a healthy choice.
It is certainly a food current that comes from the United States, with some famous standard-bearers such as the perpetually dieting Gwyneth Paltrow or the very powerful Oprah Winfrey. But it's not just about fashion: the celiac disease it is a serious problem, which according to the latest estimates affects one in a hundred Italians, creating disabling symptoms in the most serious cases.
The problem with gluten is that it is really found almost everywhere, even in apparently unsuspected foods.
However, there are categories of products designed specifically for those with food allergies or for those who have chosen to give up gluten for their diet. Among the products also made in gluten-free version there are i Biscuits, which fill the shelves of supermarkets.
For the Tasting test of Dissapore we have selected fifteen brands among the most popular in Italian supermarkets.
- Simple and good - Pam & Panorama chocolate and hazelnut shortbread biscuits
- The Venetian - Molino di ferro biscuits with cocoa and hazelnuts
- Simply Gluten Free - Cookies with chocolate chips
- Rice & Rice - Dame cocoa rice biscuits
- Mulino Bianco - Shortbread biscuits with wildflower honey
- Galbusera ZeroGrano - cocoa and hazelnut shortbread biscuits
- Coop Benesì - Shortbread biscuits with chocolate drops
- Schar - Precious with chocolate and cocoa
- Céréal - Cookies with chocolate chips
- We will do - Dark chocolate shortbread biscuits
- Aglutén - The simple ones
- Realforno - Shortbread biscuits with cocoa and chocolate drops
- Right - Double flavor biscuits
- Panarello - Coconut sweets
- Probis Other cereals - Oatmeal biscuits
The test was carried out blindly, tasting the biscuits natural and soaked in milk.
# 15 Right - Double flavor biscuits (O)
Judgment: we tasted them mouth watering, these two flavor biscuits with cream in the middle. But our mouth water had to wait for better times.
Packaging: canned, they are proposed as a snack rather than as a breakfast biscuit.
Visual aspect: a classic filled biscuit, with a greedy look.
Ingrediants: the filling (which is the thing that differentiates this biscuit) is made up of sugar, palm oil, whey, emulsifier, sunflower lecithin and flavorings.
Taste analysis: the biscuit is very thin, even if it passes the soaking test. It is difficult to distinguish the taste of the cream from that of the shortbread, but overall the sweetness is too intrusive to have a satisfying taste experience.
Price: 23 € / kg
In short: we want the snack you promised us.
# 14 Rice & Rice - Dame cocoa rice biscuits
Judgment: a simple shortbread, which we can neither love nor hate. Despite its size, it flakes easily when soaked in milk.
Packaging: very baby-friendly, full of colors and designs. However, everything is vaguely confusing.
Visual aspect: a nice alternation of black and white enriches a full-bodied-looking biscuit.
Ingrediants: many of the ingredients come from organic farming, and it is certainly a cause for applause. Contains palm oil and cane sugar.
Taste analysis: the taste seems a little too neutral to really excite us, perhaps also because the biscuit is not very sweet when tasted.
Price: 15.96 / kg
In short: no infamy, but no praise.
VOTE: 3 ½
# 13 Realforno - Shortbread biscuits with cocoa and chocolate chips (G)
Judgment: a biscuit that we believe to be produced by Balocco for Lidl Italia, which fails to fully satisfy us in taste.
Packaging: very simple, difficult to distinguish from products with gluten of the same brand.
Visual aspect: the flower shape is pleasant and the color is inviting.
Ingrediants: The percentage of chocolate chips is not very high (5, 5%).
Taste analysis: the consistency is quite hard and the flavor is too neutral to convince us. The taste of bitter cocoa stands out but a slightly toasted note remains which seems to indicate a cooking that is not too correct.
Price: 5, 96 € / kg
In short: pity, we would have liked to reward an Italian product more
# 12 Galbusera ZeroGrano - shortbread with cocoa and hazelnuts (D)
Judgment: a biscuit that apparently would seem very greedy, but which on the palate is a little too light and very not very sweet.
Packaging: the choice of pink certainly distinguishes him from the other contenders. The image of the biscuit, the central element of the graphic, is clearly evident.
Visual aspect: the streak of powdered sugar that makes you think of an artisanal biscuit is pleasant.
Ingrediants: palm oil is also used in this case. There is also a percentage of honey (higher than that of hazelnuts), but we did not detect it when tasted.
Taste analysis: probably the appearance had created some expectations, but the taste is too neutral and a little weak for a cocoa and hazelnut shortbread. The positive note of resistance to the test of soaking in milk should be noted, despite the fact that we are dealing with a fairly thin biscuit.
Price: 12.90 € / kg
In short: appearance can also be deceiving.
VOTE: 5 -
# 11 Panarello - Coconut sweets (N)
Judgment: a light biscuit, which lacks a bit of bite.
Packaging: in a box, a simple packaging that aims to recall the craftsmanship of the product.
Visual aspect: looks like an inviting shortbread with butter.
Ingrediants: there is no palm oil. The percentage of coconut is not very high (1.1%)
Taste analysis: you can taste the butter and coconut, but the taste is too neutral to really entice us like a biscuit should. The texture is very soft, and the shortbread crumbles easily.
Price: € 24.91 / kg
In short: if coconut has to be, then coconut is.
# 10 Coop Benesì - Shortbread biscuits with chocolate chips (E)
Judgment: a thick, full-bodied biscuit that remains compact even if soaked in milk for a long time. A little disappointing in terms of taste, but healthy in terms of ingredients.
Packaging: slightly soft colors and not particularly attractive. Certainly more can be done.
Visual aspect: too dark, it looks charred.
Ingrediants: there is no palm oil and the ingredients are in the right proportion. There are also a large percentage of chocolate chips (10%), but we would prefer them a little thicker and tastier.
Taste analysis: the crunchiness of the shortbread is certainly its most positive feature. The overall taste is a little neutral, not too sweet, with a slightly toasted taste perhaps due to overcooking.
Price: 7, 8 € / kg
In short: turn that oven down!
VOTE: 5 +
# 9 Céréal - Chocolate chip cookies (P)
Judgment: a certainly greedy product, but more like a dessert than a biscuit, even in the quantity of fats and calories.
Packaging: canned rather than in a bag, they appear more like a snack than a breakfast biscuit.
Visual aspect: it is a classic "cookie", with an inviting and buttery appearance.
Ingrediants: first on the list is sugar, second is palm fat.
Taste analysis: the taste confirms the visual aspect: we are dealing with a cookie, an Anglo-Saxon biscuit with a round and full-bodied flavor, one that fills the mouth. Compared to other biscuits of this kind, however, a slightly bitter aftertaste persists.
Price: € 19.20 / kg
In short: If you want to have breakfast with us every morning, you will have to work a little harder in the gym.
VOTE: 5 ½
# 8 Simple and good - Pam & Panorama chocolate and hazelnut shortbread biscuits (H)
Judgment: it was a hard-fought judgment, the one about Pam shortbread biscuits. It will be the texture, it will be the extra dark chocolate color, something they gave us. But in the end they didn't quite convince us.
Packaging: the light brown color recalls the idea of naturalness and simplicity, and the product stands out. Promoted.
Visual aspect: dark chocolate color.
Ingrediants: palm oil free.
Taste analysis: the consistency is "crunchy", and it is a positive note in a biscuit, which also allows you to soak them easily without crumbling. The taste is mainly chocolate, with a toasted and slightly bitter aftertaste. We cannot confidently perceive the nutty flavor.
Price: 11, 60 € / kg
In short: desperately looking for hazelnuts.
VOTE: 6 -
# 7 Schar - Precious with chocolate and cocoa (C)
Judgment: they recall the well-known biscuits with the stars, and the tendency towards imitation is never good, if only because it diminishes the product. Which is not bad, even if it doesn't excite.
Packaging: a little simple.
Visual aspect: Already seen.
Ingrediants: contains mono and diglycerides of fatty acids, palm fat, coconut fat, rapeseed oil, natural flavors, vegetable margarine. The percentage of chocolate is 5%.
Taste analysis: it is a completely "normal" biscuit, which has nothing to envy to biscuits that contain gluten, but which remains anonymous. The egg flavor is slightly persistent.
Price: 14, 80 € / kg
In short: we would have expected more from the “gluten-free” kings.
# 6 Simply Gluten Free - Chocolate Chip Cookies (F)
Judgment: a biscuit with an overall satisfactory taste, but with a list of ingredients that penalize it in the general judgment. It resists well the test of soaking in milk, thanks also to its thickness.
Packaging: bold, due to the use of purple.
Visual aspect: a light biscuit, with a few drops of chocolate. Buttery in appearance.
Ingredients: they contain coconut and sunflower palm vegetable fats and oils, as well as mono and diglycerides of fatty acids.
Taste analysis: the taste is substantially balanced and not excessively sweet. The chocolate chips are the best note: big and tasty, when they arrive they are a joy. We would have wanted a few more.
Price: € 8.50 / kg
In short: more chocolate chips for everyone.
VOTE: 6 +
# 5 Probis Altricereali - Oat biscuits (M)
Judgment: a homemade biscuit, a little rough in texture and taste, with a distinct taste of cereals.
Packaging: a little confused, with too many graphic and photographic overlays.
Visual aspect: very simple and rustic.
Ingrediants: sweetened with cane sugar, contains rosemary extracts. Many of the ingredients are organic in nature. There is no palm oil.
Taste analysis: a biscuit different from all the other contenders, with a much simpler flavor and strongly focused on the taste of cereals. There is also a salty aftertaste when tasted, probably due to rosemary extracts.
Price: 11, 56 € / kg
In short: #cerealoso
VOTE: 6 ½
# 4 Mulino Bianco - shortbread biscuits with wildflower honey (Q)
Judgment: a biscuit that looks like the shortbread biscuits of the past and that points to the tradition of simple and good things even with taste. A little too thin to resist soaking well in milk.
Packaging: packaged in single portions of eight shortbread biscuits, it focuses on the green color that refers to nature and organic.
Visual aspect: the simple and old-time aspect of this biscuit with the central flower is a bit punitive.
Ingrediants: palm vegetable fat and sunflower oil are used. The percentage of honey used is sufficient (2, 9%).
Taste analysis: a shortbread that has a scent of milk and butter, to which a clear (but not intrusive) taste of honey and a slightly too persistent egg taste are added to the taste.
Price: 9, 56 € / kg
In short: the charm of yesteryear.
# 3 Le Veneziane - Molino di ferro biscuits with cocoa and hazelnuts (A)
Judgment: with a dark brown appearance they would seem very laden with chocolate, while on tasting from this point of view they disappoint a little. Soaked in milk, they fall apart rather quickly.
Packaging: very elegant and well-finished, it suggests a product of excellence.
Visual aspect: an inviting, very dark chocolate shortbread.
Ingrediants: they do not contain palm oil, the food enemy of the new millennium.
Taste analysis: crumbly consistency, balanced and pleasant taste, with a clear hint of cocoa and hazelnut. However, the flicker that would allow them to be promoted with greater determination is missing.
Price: 9, 20 € / kg
In short: a successful donut with a hole
VOTE: 7 ½
# 2 Aglutén - The simple ones (I)
Judgment: they are a cuddle more than a daily breakfast biscuit, as suggested by the small package (100 gr) and the claim "give yourself a whim".
Packaging: simple even in the outward appearance.
Visual aspect: the chocolate chips fill a large surface of the biscuit.
Ingrediants: there is no palm oil.
Taste analysis: although it is perfect for the test of soaking, it looks more like a dessert than a shortbread to eat accompanied with coffee and milk. The taste definitely tends towards sweet, even if it is not cloying.
Price: 20 € / kg
In short: for after dinner, more than for breakfast.
# 1 Farmo - Dark chocolate shortbread biscuits (L)
Judgment: we fell in love. Gluten or non-gluten, we are faced with a biscuit with a really good taste.
Packaging: not up to the quality of the product.
Visual aspect: cute heart shape, excellent dark color.
Ingrediants: there is palm and sunflower oil, as well as some thickener and emulsifier.
Taste analysis: a soft, tasty, greedy biscuit. In a word: fully satisfactory. The chocolate flavor really fills the mouth, and if that of the dough were not enough, there is also the addition of abundant drops (17%).
Price: 14, 45 € / kg
In short: chocolate, heart and love
VOTE: 9 ½
WHAT WE LEARNED
Of course, we wanted to make the task of this tasting a little easier, choosing from all the cookies available those with a slightly more gluttonous appearance. To be clear, between a simple and candid shortbread and one of the same brand enriched with chocolate chips, we have chosen the latter without delay.
Not just a matter of gluttony: we are really convinced that a healthy diet - whether it is made out of dietary conviction, out of fashion or out of health needs - shouldn't be a punitive choice. So, the biscuit is the first cuddle we have in the morning, and even gluten-free it must remain so.
In addition, among the considerations to be made, there remains a gigantic doubt: by removing gluten, is it really a healthy choice? Between palm oil, added fats and sugars, various aromas, we are not so convinced.
The final decision is yours: the morning latte, after all, remains a private matter between you and your awakening.
