And now, Eataly it also came to Trieste. In the capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia, "the easternmost Eataly shop in Italy" opened a few days ago, largely inspired in its creation by the winds that blow impetuously in this region.
The new store was obtained from the Antico Magazzino Vini, a historic building overlooking the port, built in 1902 for the storage of barrels arriving from Istria and Dalmatia.
Entirely built in stone and wood, today it has been recovered by the Florentine architect Marco Casamonti, who has created, inside, an additional independent building covered with Istrian stone walls interspersed with large windows, from which you can enjoy the panorama of the gulf and the port of Trieste.
For some years Trieste has freed itself from the austere image of Habsburg reminiscence to become a dynamic town, as well as one of the most popular tourist destinations, as evidenced by the flourishing of new venues and interesting meeting points.
The new opening of Eataly in the Julian city is another example of this constant modernization process.
Apart from the underground car park, Eataly Trieste is spread over three floors.
On the first floor there is an educational room where events, meetings, courses and tastings open to the public are held, as well as a cellar with over 1000 different labels that gives ample space to the producers of the Italian "Collio" and Slovenian "Brda".
The "orange wines" - wines from white grapes with prolonged maceration - from Central European countries are interesting. The offer is completed by a wide selection of beers, including artisanal beers.
On the ground floor is the heart of the new shop, that is to say “the square”, which overlooks four spaces suitable for any moment of the day.
The Bakery offers a wide selection of breads and pizzas produced thanks to the collaboration with Mulino Marino, all characterized by particular care in the processing based on high hydration and long leavening.
Then there are ice cream parlors, pastry shops and the “Pane & Vino” wine bar.
Also on the ground floor are the departments dedicated to pasta, fruit, vegetables, books and also a fish-delicatessen, “La Barcaccia”, which has moved its headquarters from the city to the new point of sale.
And in the city of coffee par excellence, an Illy café - one of the architects of the project for the new store - could not be missing, which also offers Agrimontana products and Domori chocolate.
There is also a space dedicated to fresh pastries not only with the products of Luca Montersino but also those of Maritani, an artisan pastry shop based in Staranzano (Gorizia), well known in the region, which has also prepared the dessert for the inauguration of the new point. sale.
Through the escalators, you enter the second floor.
Here you will find packaged products, cured meats and cheeses, the butcher and the Osteria del Vento, a restaurant where among fried fish, raw meat appetizers and apple studel you can taste the pizza of the executive chef Enrico Panero, prepared with and Mulino Marino flours and stuffed with Eataly's “high foods”.
The employees of the new store are 85, the expected revenues are between 8 and 10 million a year, for a store, the 34th in the world, which in addition to the valuable renovation of the Antico Magazzino Vini is also furnished with four Sergio Staino.
During the inauguration of the new store we witnessed the presentation of the butcher's shop, with ample space for La Granda meat and the inevitable celebration of the Piedmontese Fassona breed.
The Slow Food Presidium now seems to have taken over, at least in the collective imagination, over all the other valuable native cattle breeds present on the national territory.
In fact, the attention to Piedmont and its products can also be felt here, in the "easternmost of Italy" store, despite the fact that the policy declared by Eataly has always been to give space to local realities and producers.
Just as the labels of regional craft beers could have found more space, present only in number of three - Leaves of Grass, the town of Cittavecchia and Gjulia - while there is ample space for oil, with brands from all over Istria.
The inauguration of the new Trieste store was naturally Oscar Farinetti, together with the store manager Antonio De Paolo and the president Andrea Guerra, who spoke of how the new Eataly has the ambition of becoming a "cross-border" store, with a a good part - about 25 per cent - of local products, but also with large spaces dedicated to workshops and events, as happens in the other Eataly stores in Italy and around the world.
And now, the word passes to the people of Trieste: solid, concrete people but also a lover of good food and good food. It will be up to them to decide whether or not the new store will be one of Eataly's most loved, popular and profitable.
