I slept at the foot of the Eyakiudoqhwxykgiqdohjokull volcano in the summer of 1988, which was memorable for that trip, and for Gaja's Barolo Sperss. Iceland is unforgettable for two reasons: first, it is an extraordinary collection of landscapes; second, it is as expensive as poison. No one should die without having seen Iceland: which is the only country in the world without trees, inhabited only by beautiful and fat people, and where dogs must ask for permission to procreate. Curious country: a seething land, with the horizon that always seems a hundred meters away. It was so expensive - and I was so grainy * - that I carried 14 dinners in my backpack along with the tent and sleeping bag: 7 portions of P. Reggiano Stravecchio, 2 cheap cacciatorini, 2 packs of wustel. I don't remember the rest, while I remember very well that a coffee cost 18 thousand lire. From 1988.

That experience came back to my mind when I observed the one thousand million passengers wandering through air terminals, stations and maritime stations these days, on the verge of death from starvation, deprivation and dehydration. Here are some samples.

1. That of the K ration. The man "k" has a purely military attitude, and never lets himself be caught unprepared. He always has a bar of black chocolate and a bottle of cordial in the inside pocket of his jacket.

2. The water-soluble girl. The water-soluble girl came up with the plin plin ad, and she always walks around with the bottle of mineral in her purse. Natural, out of the fridge and low in sodium. Someone told her that "she must drink a lot of water", so it will certainly not be an epochal eruption to stop her.

3. Those of grandmother Piera. My grandmother Piera always put 12 hard-boiled eggs in her purse even if she had to go on pilgrimage to San Luca. However, few of these specimens are seen.

4. Those of sport. The saline supplement and nutritional bar emerge from the sports bag, just to avoid the sugar drop caused by the huge up-and-down escalators.

5. Those who never have to ask. Tall, slender, with some gray hair, they stand upright in the middle of the crossroads of the gates, staring at the horizon through the glass. When they learn that the flight has been canceled, they touch the phone screen and book at the Grand Hotel, people who come, people who go.

Because the volcano must survive.

* grainy = in reggiano, without grain, green.
