If you too are moved by the tale of the sad princess Lady Diana Spencer, you must go to London. In Notting Hill, precisely, near Kensington Palace, where Cafe Diana has been open since 1989.

You will be surrounded by images, photos, pictures and wall posters depicting Lady D during various public appearances: with Harry and William on sports day, while rafting with Carlo or on one of the many diplomatic visits around the world.

From the story that Munchies tells of it, the gastronomic section of Vice, the Middle Eastern restaurant, a small temple of kitsch, is not a trap for tourists eager to savor the royal atmosphere, as evidenced by the large number of customers who frequent it. The place attracts all kinds of people, a variety equal to the type of food on the menu: falafel, kofta or other ethnic food, appreciated by the English middle class as well as by Iraqi students in search of traditional flavors.

Cafe Diana was born from a chance meeting of the owner, Abdul Daoud, with Lady D: “while I was waiting for a delivery, Diana with her two children passed by. A sign, I thought, I'll call Cafe Diana”.

Daoud, who arrived in the UK from Baghdad where he had worked in his father's restaurant, wanted to bring his version of lamb kofta (Middle Eastern meatballs, often made with lamb meat) to London, out of an admiration for England. and for the royal family, especially Diana: “I thought maybe she would like the idea, or maybe she would think I'm a maniac instead”.

Over the years, Diana and her family, who lived a few hundred meters from the Cafe, visited Abdul a few times: "When I put up the sign that Christmas, I saw that she was looking at the shop. I was worried she didn't like it, but then I saw her pointing the name to her children and smiling. Later, she came to visit the place ".

Lady D didn't order Daoud's famous kofta meatballs, more simply asked for a cappuccino, as well as an espresso for her bodyguard. "He asked my name and where I came from, and he made me feel at ease."

Yet in the café memorabilia a section of the menu is called "Diana's dishes", Diana's dishes: first on the list a chicken kofta kebab. Not quite a princess lunch.

Regarding Prince Harry's upcoming wedding, Daoud has no doubts about his future wife: “the mother would be thrilled. There was just the 20-year anniversary of his death, which reminded us of very sad things. We needed good news”.

And for the occasion, Daoud will set up an event: "We were open until 3 am for Prince William, and we will do the same for Harry and his girlfriend".

The two newlyweds have practically ready the post-wedding after party.

Under the watchful eye of Lady D.
