Buonappetito - The cheapest panettone there is

This morning I walked into the Penny Market in front of the office with a clear goal: to buy the cheapest panettone there was.

I found it in no time: "Classic Panettone Gifts of Goodness" weighing one kilo, € 3, 29.

How is a panettone made that costs like bread? That's how it is done.

It has a very Christmas red packaging. It is produced by Vecchio Forno Srl of Brogliano (Vicenza) especially for Penny Market. And it has this ingredient list:

wheat flour, sultanas 17%, candied orange peels 11, 1% (orange peels, glucose-fructose syrup, sugar), sugar, butter, natural yeast (mother yeast, wheat flour), egg yolk 'fresh egg, emulsifiers: mono and diclycerides of fatty acids, glucose syrup, salt, milk proteins, natural flavors, skimmed milk powder.

In short: the usual things of industrial panettone.

So I open it, I taste it and it is the usual industrial panettone, with the only specific characteristic of being very moist, which makes it a little more pleasant than dry ones and also heavier.

A colleague tastes it and tells me: not bad. And it's not like he's all wrong.

Because by now the panettone industry has got us so used to these products that in fact even the "Gifts of Goodness" is no worse than many other panettone from large companies sold at double, triple, even quadruple.

In fact, I find "Gifts of Goodness" quite honest.

Others more seasoned, in his place, would have screamed at the package “WITH MOTHER YEAST! WITH FRESH EGGS! WITH REAL BUTTER! WITHOUT PALM OIL! ONLY NATURAL AROMAS!"

After all, I almost fell in love with "Gifts of Goodness", the ugly duckling of panettone that doesn't even pretend to be a swan.
