In a new documentary videos made by Being Animals are witnessed maltreatment of pigs on a farm intended for the production of ham dop. An investigator from Be Animals worked undercover for twenty days on the farm, wearing a hidden video camera and found illegal, irregular procedures and even serious mistreatment of animals. You can see the video on YouTube, but beware: it contains very strong and gory images (part of the video was also broadcast by Report).

In the video you can see pigs thrown roughly into the pens, beaten up, anal prolapses resolved with the application of safety pins and even the habit, after the sterilization and the caudotomy, of throwing the testicles and tails into the manger, which stimulates the phenomenon of cannibalism.

Obviously the farm in question was immediately reported for the crime of animal abuse (in accordance with the provisions of Article 544-ter of the Criminal Code). The complaint also ended the inadequate castration procedures carried out by non-health workers and without anesthesia in pigs up to a month or two of age. The legislation, in fact, provides that if the pig is more than seven days old, these interventions must be carried out by a veterinarian through the use of anesthesia.

This is certainly not the first intensive farming in which similar situations are reported. And it also happens in farms that supply the raw material for PDO hams. But how to avoid such behavior? In reality there are very specific rules and laws to follow, but there is also someone who constantly checks that these rules are respected to the letter. In addition, there is also the problem of demand: almost all of the pork comes from this type of farm. With the current demand for meat it is unthinkable to be able to satisfy the market with outdoor farming, it can only be achieved through intensive farming.
