Okay, more clichés than the cupcake there are only those who hate the cupcake. But in Italy, the hair-pickers who believe that there is something luxuriant beyond the spongy lacquer of its frosting are increasing exponentially. And in general, American sweets have never been so popular.
Pay attention to it, among the new pastry shops the signs all end up as "bakery", now there are no more snacks with friends but only "celebration party" based on cake desing and sugar art.
The American myth is everywhere: in the refrigerator, in the kitchen pages of women's magazines, in the supermarket, in the food corners of multiplexes, in the gastronomic proposals of shopping centers.
And to think that those fake cup-shaped paradises that are cupcakes seem to have been made on purpose to castrate our desire. And they commit their first abuse of mankind by putting the number one ingredient in the deduction of pleasure on their plate: the measure.
Who would have thought that a people of gourmets like ours could one day love and import American pastry?
But not all hope is lost.
If you think like us it will cheer you up, it will hearten you to know from today's Wall Streeet Journal that the hysteria over that deposit of preservatives known as cupcakes is finally collapsing.
Numbers don't lie
“After being swapped over 13$ in June 2011, a share of Crumbs Bake Shop, (the leading cupcake chain in the United States, $ 31 million in revenues in 2010, listed on Wall Street the following year), literally sank to 1.70$ last Friday, when Crumbs declared that 2013 turnover would be 20% lower than forecasts”.
According to Wall Street analysts, the cause is the end of the cupcakemania that has hit American gourmets in recent years.
Could it be the beginning of the end for cupcakes? Count us among those who cheer, and secretly trust that what happens in the United States has repercussions in Italy.
But much earlier than usual.
