L' Holland asked the EU to cut down on caffeine in food supplements. The reason? There is a risk of exceeding the limits imposed by EFSA., with all the symptoms of the case such as headache, nervousness and hypertension.
The fact is that the Rivm, the Dutch Institute for Public Health, has carried out a study that shows that the excessive use of food supplements containing caffeine can harm human health. For this reason, the Netherlands have decided to ask the European Union to set standards limits for caffeine in food supplements of any kind.
The fact is that these limits do not exist at the moment, all that you have only the recommendations of EFSA (EU agency for food safety), which indicated the maximum amount of caffeine to be taken according to age: for adults we are talking about 4-6 cups of coffee a day.
The problem is that those who consume caffeine-containing food supplements (athletes, fitness addicts, people who need to increase concentration, stay awake or even lose weight) are likely to exceed these limits. And this is because, in addition to food supplements, caffeine is consumed through other foods such as the coffee itself or even the chocolate. By combining the caffeine present in these foods with that of supplements, the limit is exceeded, putting our health at risk.
