Maxi scam by wines from discounters sold as if they were fine bottles Igt, Doc or Docg at very competitive prices. Most of the operations were done on the web, especially on eBay.

The scammers bought "normal" wine, often even poor, and used it to fill empty bottles of Champagne, Brunello or Barbarescor. The bottles were then sealed with corks and counterfeit capsules.

Finally the bottles of fake fine wine were put on the market, on online squares. The maxi scam was in the sights of the Nas of Florence since 2018 and the whole peninsula is involved: the provinces of Avellino, Barletta-Andria-Trani, Brescia, Como, Foggia, Pisa, Prato and Rome. Nine search decrees against as many under investigation for counterfeiting of fine wines, both Italian and foreign.

Counterfeit bottles were being sold not only in Italy, but also in Spain, Germany, Belgium, France and the USA. Obviously the very competitive prices are the first alarm bell, but non-experts can easily run into scams of this type.
