The price of white truffle goes up again: a few days ago it had reached 4,000 euros / kg, while now it has risen further to 4,500 euros / kg. And all because of the climate.

To give the news was Coldiretti: the average price of white truffles increased by 28%, reaching 450 euros per hectogram at the Alba market. This is not a record figure: that primacy is up to 2012 when the truffle reached 500 euros per hectogram. However, we are at the levels of 2017: even four years ago, in fact, the price of truffles reached 450 euros per hectogram for medium sizes ranging from 15 to 20 grams. In 2013, however, it stood at around 350 euros per hectogram.

The reason for the rise in prices is soon said: it is all the fault of the climate. To develop well, the Tuber magnatum Pico needs fresh and moist soils both in the germination phase and in the ripening phase. Only this year there was a long period of drought which negatively affected germination.

Fortunately, however, the rains and bad weather the last few weeks are having positive results on production, especially in the Marche, Calabria, Umbria, Molise, Abruzzo, Tuscany, Lazio and Piedmont, all regions where the truffle harvest is king.

The hope now is that rainfall will remain constant, without further periods of drought, but without even turning into violent downpours, thunderstorms and hailstorms: excessive adverse weather conditions, in fact, would again damage the production of truffles (and consequently would also damage all the festivals and events dedicated to it, as well as all the shops and restaurants that offer it on the menu).
