Growing - along with a general trend towards the search for healthier lifestyles - is the desire to organic wine, to the point that now in Italy the 19% of the vineyards are organic.
Photographing this positive result is the report "The organic wine chain", published by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies and produced by Ismea in collaboration with CIHEAM-Bari, as part of the activities of the National Information System on Agriculture Organic (SINAB). In the analysis, the last notebook of a thematic series dedicated to the world of organic, it is highlighted that the research of organic is now also crucial in the wine world: in Italy, in 2020, 4 out of 100 bottles of wine are organic.
Italy, from this point of view, is a pioneer: our 19% of hectares of organic vines (there are a total of 107,143 hectares of organic vineyards in our country, with a growth of 109% in ten years) is clearly above the average., so much so that it represents the highest share in Europe and in the world. Globally, of the 7 million hectares of total viticultural surface surveyed, 6.7% are organic hectares.
"This thematic notebook represents an important source of information for the players in the organic wine industry. - underlined Francesco Battistoni, Undersecretary of Agriculture - Italian organic is a product of great quality, it is no coincidence that we are the first European exporters and second in the world. We have the highest number of organic operators in the old continent and a constantly expanding market. Our supply chain model is a virtuous example, but we are aware that we still have a lot of room for growth. For a farmer, dedicating oneself to organic farming certainly represents a challenge, but at the same time also a precious opportunity to do business while respecting the canons of economic, environmental and social sustainability ".
